I remember the first time I heard Jim Morrison singing “Break on through”, I was a sulky teen and my bestie and I had snuck into her older brother’s bedroom to listen to his way cool collection of music. His room was dingy and sacred, and we worked our way through his CD collection. Musical imposters. I remember sitting on the old bedroom carpet, staring at the CD cover, into Jim’s sultry bad-ass eyes, dreaming of kissing a boy like him, the music filling our young brains.

I recently had the pleasure of having my hair done! And when I say done, I mean a Brazilian hair straightening thingy. The chemicals used nearly burned the entire cornea off my eyes, which according to my sense of logic indicates proper hair treatment. I am now the proud owner of salon-straight hair, every day of the week. Quite a thing for a girl who lives in a windy, small seaside town, where getting dressed-up means putting your slops on, not just going barefoot.

Two weeks into ‘back to school’, I met with a friend for coffee. “I’ll be running the Fish Hoek Primary School Ambassador Leadership Development training programme next week” she told me as we sipped our cappuccinos, admiring the pretty foam pictures the barista had created in our cups. I was vaguely interested in her “Ambassador training” and as only a caring friend would do, I asked what she did in this programme. Personally, the thought of engaging with 120 thirteen-year olds, was enough to make me whimper in the corner.
